  1. I just finished reading the New York Times story about Nick and you. You both are to be commended for all you’ve accomplished. As someone who has dealt with depression off and on for 30 years and sadly lost my brother to suicide 11 years ago, I am concerned for Nick and his life. Simply want to show my support for both of you. Yes, he definitely needs to see his worth and not relate that to his running.

  2. Oh my goodness, gracious. I just read the NYT piece. Your story is so eerily familiar. According to the article, Peter Attia suspects that endurance sports attract trauma/addiction/mental illness sufferers. I’m now at this moment making the connection that it probably also attracts caregivers, yes? And, interestingly, people who own multiple rescue pets (?). You and I have some things in common, and I’m truly grateful that the article included not just your spouse but you. Boy–you and I could probably talk for hours on end.

    1. Hi Leila, thank you for your comment. I actually don’t believe there is a connection between endurance sports, mental health, and caregiving. I also hesitate to say that because I have rescue pets and have always loved animals, I’m a caregiver at heart. To be honest, I would struggle immensely being a caregiver for people in the setting of a health care facility. Thank you for reading and have a great day!

  3. Hi, Jade, Congratulations on the beautiful article in the New York Times about Nick’s athletic and mental health journey with BPD. I could not find a way to contact him directly, but then I found you on this website. My name is Paula Tusiani-Eng, LMSW, M.Div. I am co-founder and Executive-Director of Emotions Matter Inc. a 501c3 non-profit organization to support people with BPD to promote recovery through peer support, education and advocacy. http://www.emotionsmatterbpd.org. I was blown away at how this article was written from a non-stigmatized lens about BPD, and that through your interview and Nick’s it emphasizes his amazing strengths while describing symptoms. I love BPD is described as a blessing and a challenge — that it has led to perseverence, risk-taking, a sense of purpose, determination, and also emptiness, shame and struggle. I would welcome the chance to talk further and explore if we can do a Zoom meeting with you and Nick for our community at some point in the fall or winter. I want to help get Nick’s story and your journey toward recovery out there to people that need to hear it. You can find me at paula@emotionsmatterbpd.org. Thank you again for your courage in telling this story and regards to Nick! Best, Paula
